An initial silk painting was completed on location in Highgate Woods using layered pools of acrylic ink and high flow acrylic paint, which spread over the silk in unpredictable formations. Back in the studio the silk was stretched onto a canvas to allow more controlled mark making using graphite and ink, allowing the processing and evolution of memories from the original location.

Series Overview

The Language of Memory (Subjectivity of Perception) series evolved from studies of trees completed in situ and subsequently transformed, through a process of iteration and investigation, into indeterminate forms recording the memory of place. The process aims to build a personal language with which to explore the experience of being physically present, questioning the subjectivity of our individual experiences.
